A Little Piece of Something I Made

I have a habit of falling in love with hobbies. Over the years, I’ve tried countless crafts, from resin and engraving to embroidery and now watercoloring. Some have stayed with me longer than others, and some have quietly faded into the background as something new caught my attention.

The funny thing about trying so many crafts is that I’ve accumulated a rather ridiculous collection of supplies. Every new hobby seems to require its own assortment of things, and naturally, I convince myself I need them. At this point, I could probably open a craft store with all the supplies from hobbies I haven’t touched in months. Surely I’ll need them again someday, right?

Lately, though, watercoloring has found a little home in my heart.

I’m not particularly good at it yet, but I don’t think that’s the point. There’s something peaceful about sitting down with a paintbrush and a blank piece of paper, watching colors come together and slowly turn into something recognizable. Sometimes things turn out differently than I imagined, but I’m learning to enjoy the process instead of worrying so much about the result.

This past week, I’ve been painting little Halloween prints to tuck into cards for my friends. Pumpkins, black cats, spiderwebs, and whatever else happens to find its way onto the paper. I haven’t made specific designs for specific people. I’ve simply painted whatever I felt like painting, and when the cards go out, the prints will be tucked inside at random.

Someone might get a pumpkin. Someone else might get a black cat. I honestly won’t know who ends up with what until I put the cards together.

And I think that’s part of the fun.

There’s something about sending happy little things through the mail that I’ve always loved. A handwritten message, a pretty postcard, a small piece of art made at my own table. They’re little things, perhaps, but little things have a way of making an ordinary day feel a bit less ordinary. I like knowing that something I made will travel beyond my own four walls and find its way into someone else’s hands.

Now, of course, my brain has already wandered toward Christmas. I’m planning to spend November and part of December making Christmas-themed prints to include with my holiday cards. Because apparently, I cannot simply enjoy one craft without immediately finding a way to turn it into another project.

But maybe that’s just part of being someone who loves to create. There’s always another idea waiting around the corner, another skill to learn, another little thing I want to try.

I don’t know how long watercoloring will hold my attention. Maybe it will become one of those hobbies I return to for years, or maybe someday I’ll find myself falling down another creative rabbit hole, buying supplies I absolutely do not need and insisting this time will be different.

For now, though, I’m happy here.

I’m happy learning something new, making imperfect little paintings, and finding reasons to send a little more joy through the mail. I don’t need to be particularly talented at something to love doing it. I don’t need every hobby to become a lifelong passion, either.

Sometimes, it’s enough to find something that makes the days a little brighter. Something that gives your hands something to do and your mind somewhere else to wander for a while. Something that reminds you there is still so much to try, to learn, and to enjoy.

So, here’s to the hobbies we fall in love with, the supplies we swear we’ll use again, and the little pieces of ourselves we send out into the world without ever knowing exactly where they’ll land.

For now, mine are painted in watercolor and tucked inside Halloween cards.
